paramilitary unit: a group of people who act like a military group, but who are not part of the official military
vigilante unit: a group of people who act like the police, but are not part of the official police
labor camp: a place where people are forced to work (for example, a concentration camp)
genocide: when many people are killed because of their race, religion, national origin, membership in a group, or political opinion
torture: to cause a great amount of pain in another person without killing them
rebel group: a group of people who are against something, usually a government
guerrilla group: a group of people who use weapons against or otherwise physically attack the military, police, government, or other people
militia: an army of people, not part of the official military
insurgent organization:a group that uses weapons and fights against a government
detention facility: a place where people are forced to stay, a jail or a prison
weapon: a thing that causes bodily harm or damage (for example, a gun, knife, bomb, or rocket)
recruit: to ask someone to join a group or organization
enlist: to sign someone up into a group or organization
conscript: to require/force someone to join a group or organization
combat: active fighting between people and/or groups or armies

good moral character - having good behavior
sealed - closed
expunged - erased or removed
disclose - make secret information known
committed a crime or offense - did something illegal, against the law
offense - a minor crime
arrested - taken in handcuffs by the police in the back of a police car to the police station for fingerprinting and having your photo taken
cited - ordered to appear in court or pay a fine for doing something illegal, received a traffic ticket
detained - stopped by a police officer or other government official
charged - the police gave you a formal statement that you did something illegal
convicted - found guilty of a crime in a court of law
alternative sentencing - a different way to punish someone (for example, community service or a work program)
rehabilitative program - a program that restores someone to health
deferred - delayed until a later date
adjudication - a final decision on a legal matter or a court case
probation - a system that allows a criminal to leave prison early or not to go to prison at all, if the person promises to behave well and keeps in contact with a probation officer
paroled - let out of prison early by agreeing to obey set conditions

VOCABULARY for Part 12, Questions 30-44:
drunkard: someone who frequently drinks too much alcohol and cannot think or act normally
prostitute: someone who has sex with people to earn money
smuggled: took something illegal (e.g., drugs) across an international border
narcotics: any illegal or unlawfully possessed drug (e.g., heroin)
benefit: something good that you get (a green card, social security benefits, food stamps, welfare, etc)
gambled: tried to win money by playing cards, guessing the result of a race or game, etc. To gamble illegally means to win money and not pay taxes on it.
alimony: money that you have to pay regularly to your former husband or wife after a divorce
misrepresentation: an account of something that is not true, a lie
fraudulent: dishonest behavior to get something, usually money
removed, excluded, or deported: when a non-citizen is forced to leave the U.S. because he or she is in the country illegally or has violated immigration laws
rescission: when the government cancels someone’s Lawful Permanent Resident status
court-martialed: tried in a courtroom for a military crime
disciplined: punished
honorable discharge: left the military with a good record
alien: not a citizen, a person from another country
drafted: forced by the government to join the military for a period of time
exemption: special permission not to do something
deserted: left the army without permission
Selective Service: an agency of the government that requires that all male U.S. citizens register with the government within 30 days of their 18th birthday in the event of a national emergency; foreign males between the ages of 18 and 26 living in the U.S. must also register
